چکیده

Acknowledgments: The National Science Foundation and Texas Advanced Research Program provided financial support. A faculty development leave at the University of Pittsburgh provided time to write this paper. 1 The definition is from Lewis (1969) who demonstrated that it is useful to model people using sounds, gestures, or symbols to communicate things to one another as a coordination game and he used game theory to explain what it means to say that language is a convention. 2 Experience suggests that one population with eight randomly paired subjects or two populations with seven subjects in each achieves these design parameters for the class of games reviewed here.

Norms in Game Theory

This chapter summarizes two main views on norms and games as emerging in literature on game theory, social science, philosophy and artificial intelligence. The first view originates in the field of mechanism design or implementation theory and characterizes norms as mechanisms enforcing desirable social properties in classes of games. According to the second view, originating from work in the s...

Strategic Similarity and Emergent Conventions: Evidence from Similar Stag Hunt Games

This paper reports evidence on the origin of convention in laboratory cohorts confronting similar but not identical strategic situations repeatedly. The experiment preserves the action space of the game, while randomly perturbing the payoffs and scrambling the action labels in an effort to blunt the salience of retrospective selection principles. Hence, the similarity between stage games is red...

Interim and Long-Run Dynamics in the Evolution of Conventions

We characterize transitions between stochastically stable states and relative ergodic probabilities in the theory of the evolution of conventions. We give an application to the fall of hegemonies in the evolutionary theory of institutions and con ict and illustrate the theory with the fall of the Qing Dynasty and rise of Communism in China. An Evolutionary Approach to Institutional Persistence and Change

Some institutional transitions are implemented as the deliberate outcome of bargaining among a small number of groups, but many are more decentralized, with a large number of private actors informally adopting new practices that are later confirmed by changes in formal governance structures. For example, land tenure norms, changes in conventional crop shares, shifts in inheritance practices, an...

On the Music of Emergent Behavior: What Can Evolutionary Computation Bring to the Musician?

In this article, the author focuses on issues concerning musical composition practices in which emergent behavior is used to generate musical material, musical form or both. The author gives special attention to the potential of cellular automata and adaptive imitation games for music-making. The article begins by presenting two case-study systems, followed by an assessment of their role in the...
